Mirror Makeover

This is possibly the easiest makeover ever. It began with a text message from a friend. He wondered if I would like this mirror. Even though I wasn’t sure where I would put the mirror, I said yes. I promptly drove over to pick it up.

Before

Once I picked up the mirror I realized it needed a little flair. I thought about painting the mirror a bold color, like hot pink, but ultimately decided against that. I opted to just paint the decorative items on the mirror gold (the same cheap gold paint I use for almost everything). I used a small paint brush to thickly cover the decorative bits. Luckily the elements were raised so it was easy to paint them without getting paint other places. One coat of paint looked good, but I did a second coat just to be sure I got all the nooks and crannies.

TIP Sometimes little changes can have a big impact. If you’re not sure what to do with a piece, try a few minor changes and see where that leads. If you don’t have the time or the resources to do a total makeover, you might be able to transform the look of something with what you already have on hand in just a few minutes.

After

The glass on the mirror was foxed using a poorly done paint technique. At some point I plan to antique the mirror so it looks like more authentic. But for now, it is better than it was. I didn’t do anything other than add gold, but that little change transformed the mirror. It looks darker and definitely is more interesting.
